Staying Safe While Hiking in North Yorkshire

Hiking in a Heatwave: How to Stay Safe While Exploring the Yorkshire Dales

There’s no better way to experience the beauty of Wensleydale than on foot. From gentle riverside walks to challenging hill climbs, the Yorkshire Dales offer spectacular scenery at every turn. However, when temperatures soar during a heatwave, even familiar routes can become significantly more demanding.

Whether you’re setting off from Yorebridge House for a morning stroll or planning a full day in the fells, taking a few extra precautions can help ensure your adventure remains enjoyable and safe.

Start Early & Finish Early

During a heatwave, a little planning can go a long way. Setting out early allows you to enjoy the Yorkshire Dales at their most comfortable, before temperatures reach their peak later in the day. As well as helping you avoid the strongest sunshine, an early start can make for a more relaxed and enjoyable walking experience.

There is also something special about the Dales in the early morning. Quiet trails, soft golden light and the opportunity to spot local wildlife all combine to create a memorable start to the day.

Stay Hydrated

Staying well hydrated is essential when exploring the Yorkshire Dales during a heatwave. Warm temperatures and prolonged sun exposure can quickly increase the risk of dehydration, particularly on more exposed routes. Carry plenty of water and drink regularly throughout your walk to help maintain your energy levels and enjoy your surroundings comfortably.

If you’re planning a longer hike, consider taking electrolyte tablets or drinks to help replace the salts lost through sweating. It’s also wise to carry extra water, as conditions can often feel warmer on the fells than many walkers anticipate.

Dress for the Weather

Dressing appropriately for hot weather can make your walk far more enjoyable. Lightweight technical fabrics and merino wool are excellent choices, as they help wick moisture away from the skin and regulate body temperature. Pair these with loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing to stay as cool as possible. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are also essential for protecting yourself from the sun’s rays.

Many seasoned walkers opt for lightweight long-sleeved tops during a heatwave. While it may seem counterintuitive, these garments provide additional protection from the sun without compromising on breathability, helping you stay comfortable on longer walks across the Yorkshire Dales.

Apply SPF

Sun protection should be an essential part of any summer walk. Apply a high-factor sunscreen before setting out and remember to reapply it regularly throughout the day, particularly if you’re sweating or spending extended periods in direct sunlight. Wherever possible, seek out shaded areas and ensure you have appropriate protection, including a hat and sunglasses, when exploring the outdoors.

Know the Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Even experienced walkers can be affected by heat exhaustion during periods of very warm weather. Common symptoms include dizziness, headaches, excessive sweating, nausea, muscle cramps and feeling unusually weak or faint. If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to stop and rest in a cool or shaded area, drink water, and give your body time to recover before continuing.

While most cases can be managed with prompt action, symptoms that become more severe, such as confusion, loss of consciousness or a significant rise in body temperature, require urgent medical attention. Being aware of the warning signs and responding quickly can help ensure your time exploring the Yorkshire Dales remains both safe and enjoyable.

Choose Your Route Carefully

Choosing the right route is particularly important during a heatwave. While the Yorkshire Dales are renowned for their open landscapes and sweeping views, exposed moorland and hilltops can feel considerably warmer under prolonged sunshine. Where possible, consider routes that include woodland paths, riverside stretches or shaded spots where you can pause and enjoy the surroundings.

It can also be sensible to reduce your planned distance and allow extra time for regular breaks. A heatwave is the perfect opportunity to slow the pace, take in the scenery and enjoy the journey, rather than focusing on covering miles.

Don't Forget Your Four-Legged Friends

If you’re exploring the Dales with a dog, take extra care. Dogs can overheat much more quickly than humans. Walk during the coolest parts of the day, carry water for both of you, and avoid hot surfaces where possible. Many vets advise extreme caution when temperatures exceed the low twenties, particularly for older dogs and breeds prone to overheating.
